Inspired by Nature

I love Spring! The grass returns to its vibrant shade of green with no imperfections. Blooming flowers are everywhere. A number of Rhododendron bushes surround my home but I am particularly drawn to the one on the side of my house. It stands about 8 feet tall and could use some pruning, but I think it’s beautiful in its natural, untouched form. The buds bloom sporadically, some remain closed while others have opened into magnificent dark red blossoms. In full bloom, it is absolutely breathtaking. I can’t wait. I ask myself, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have this experience all year long? I’m sure, if that were the case, its significance would lessen as fast as the flowers fade. Perhaps, it would no longer be so special. These short lived blossoms forces me to appreciate them now and helps me to stay in the present moment.

How does all this relate to DIY? Nature is inspirational for projects yet to be. When I look at the texture of a tightly closed bud, it reminds me of a basket weave pattern. Immediately, I think of ways to translate the textured pattern or incorporate its rich red color into future projects. Looking around and taking note of what inspires me, I snap a quick photo or exercise my limited drawing abilities, jotting down notes and ideas. It becomes part of my creative journal which becomes my best tool for overcoming a creative stumbling block.
