A Coffee Table Transformed

I saw this coffee table frame at the side of the road and could not pass it up. Immediately, I thought that would make a nice bench.

Here is how I proceeded with this transformation. First, I spray painted the frame a glossy black. Next, I added a piece of plywood, drilling holes for the tufting detail. Then to create the padded seat, I glued the foam layer to the plywood base followed by a layer of batting. Prior to applying the fabric layer, I covered the foam and batting layers with a muslin cover. This is extremely important because it gives you the opportunity to shape the foam prior to applying your upholstery fabric. The muslin layer also helps to preserve the life of the upholstery fabric. Incidentally, I lucked out and found this fabric from a local thrift store. After applying the fabric layer, I purchased a button kit and covered three buttons with the fabric to tuft the seat along the center.

Then I stapled cambric fabric to underside of the plywood base to finish it off.

And Voila!! A discarded coffee table frame restyled and repurposed into a beautiful bench.

After completing this transformation, I sold it at a local consignment store. This is my way of helping to preserve the environment, decreasing the landfill, one item at a time.

Do you have any redesign or repurpose transformations you’d like to share?
