Sewing 101 – Curved Seams
As promised in Anatomy of Design – A DKNY Bag, I am continuing Sewing 101 with a “how to” for sewing curved seams. Curved seams can be tricky; however with a little practice, you will be able to sew them with precision.
Here are a few additional tips, I can offer:
1. Mark your stitching line with tailors chalk. It will provide you with a guide to follow, resulting in a more
even seam.
2. Pin your sections together and then baste your fabric prior to sewing
3. Sew as slowly as possible, picking up the presser foot and adjusting the fabric when necessary. Remember
to lower the presser foot before you resume sewing.
4. After sewing your curved seam it may be necessary to trim your seam to eliminate excess bulkiness.
5. Lastly, clip your seam allowance, staggering the clips of each layer, being careful not to cut too close
stitching line. Press accordingly.
Take your time, practice on scrap fabric and before you know it you will have mastered curved seams. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I have a metal headboard that is curved, and I’m wanting to make a slip-cover for it. Hopefully one day I’ll get time–and this post will help me. I guess I’m just wondering how exactly to make a pattern for it.
Please send me a picture. I would be happy to offer suggestions and ideas to help get you started.
