I stumbled upon this console two blocks away from my house. Immediately, I was drawn to it’s mid century modern design. It was in the driveway under a sign that read “Free, Take Me”. So, I did.
As you can see, the laminate surface was in pretty bad shape.
The door had a piece missing, but I knew I could fix that.
I sanded it, base coated it with 3 coats of Zinsser primer, followed by 2 coats of semi gloss paint. Initially, I was going to replace the ratan insets but later decided not to since it was still in pretty good condition. Instead, I decided to do something fun and stencil them instead.
If you’re wondering why there are different patterns on the doors, it’s because I haven’t yet decided which one I like better. I made a smaller version of the larger stencil design using an overhead projector sheet and an X-acto knife to cut it.
And here is the finished piece. Tah dah!

It offers a lot of storage, housing all our board games and many of our DVD’s and CD’s. Unfortunately, the cable box is a little too wide and doesn’t fit. Eventually, I will build a platform that will support the TV with a compartment for the cable box.
I rather like how it turned out. What do you think?

Another amazing job! I vote for the larger stencil.
It’s an astonishing transformation. You also make it look so easy. Very expert. Thanks for stopping by to see my kitchen. Jane F
WOW! What a great transformation!
I love the cabinet in white, and the stenciling is great. I like the door on the right. I’m visiting from Kimba’s party.
You did a great job transforming the cabinet — it looks great!! I really like the stenciled ratan — I’d go with the larger design
Thanks for your great comment on my bedroom makeover post. I totally agree, design is often an evolution — even when you think a room is done, you’re likely to see something that inspires you to make it even better

What a transformation! That piece was in ugly condition and you turned it into a beauty! Thanks for sharing at the POPP.
Oh my, what an amazing transformation! You were brave for picking that piece up, but you did a wonderful job with it. It is just perfect as a TV console. Great job!
Of course, I’ve seen this piece in the past and continue to think it’s a superb job. Jane F.
Nice fix! I prefer the bigger pattern on the stencil, if you were looking for input:)
Oh, very nice! I linked this to my media solutions project post too, well done!
