Drawer Dilemma

Whew! The weekend flew by at record speed. I think clocks start running double time or something. No time for R&R this weekend. Happily though, I was able to squeeze in some DIY. Nothing major, mostly prep work, as in sanding, a lot of sanding. I am finishing a bed for No. 1 son, his Dad, a.k.a. Mr. Woodworker, built for him a while back; a long story, I will save for another post. Then, there was this little drawer unit that I found at the Salvation Army. When I brought it home, it looked like this:

After sanding, it now looks like this:

Not sure how to finish it – stain, paint, white wash? Usually, when I am stripping or prepping a piece, I am flooded with ideas. This time, I am at a loss, not only about the finish but also how I want to use it. A charging station, perhaps? I am so indecisive, but you can help me make some decisions. How would you finish and use this piece? Can’t wait to hear from each and everyone of you out there in the blogoshpere!

Note:Measurements are 26″ W x 9″ H.

A charging station sounds like a good idea. And I don’t know what color, but get some fun knobs from Anthro!

  2. I think it would make a great charging station. Hole in the back and devices in the drawer. I would paint it a fun color…teal or yellow and the glaze it. To finish it off a nice bowl on top to collect pocket stuff. Just my 2…..or maybe 5 cents worth. Can’t wait to see it.

  3. I’m new and am a first-time visitor, but what about the darker bluish-grey that’s in your blog title? I think it would be beautiful in that color. As far as what to use it for … I can’t tell how big it is, but if the majority goes for charging station, I’m all for it!

These are all great ideas! I have such a deep appreciation for all shades of blue, especially blue-grey, teal and turquoise so I think that one of those shades is the way to go. I might already have some knobs that will work but I will definitely check out Anthropology too. Your creative input has been very helpful. Thanks so much!

I would paint it! It would be so fun if you painted the lid a different color or the drawers. It would be a little different and traditional at the same time!

Post a pic of the spot where you think it will work so we can make suggestions. It’s an eccentric piece and could go in a lot of different ways. Hope you’ll stop by if you have time. Jane F

A charging station is a fabulous idea! Just another option…you could paint the base and use teak oil or Howard’s on the top. Just a thought.

I couldn’t tell what size it was but then you said charging station so I’m guessing its small! You could use it under your house phone too. Use the drawer to hold pens, paper, phone book. You could chalkboard paint on the top so you can jot stuff down quickly! I just can’t tell what size it is!

Paint it white but leave the top wood as it is, or restain it if it needs it.

That is such an interesting piece. How big is it? The wood is so pretty that I think you should stain it, but it all depends on where you want to use it and what it would look like things around it. Can’t wait to see what you do.
