Vertical Stripes in the Dining Room

This weekend, I painted vertical stripes to create a focal point in the dining room, my fourth task of the 10 in 10 challenge hosted by The Shabby Chic Cottage. I used paint colors I already had, incorporating the surrounding wall and ceiling colors. I used the vertical lines of the faux paneling(certainly not my doing, it was there when we moved in) to create the stripes. The width of the stripes vary.

I realize it’s a lot of brown. My plan is to bring color into the room with fabric and accessories. However, they don’t wow me, they’re just okay. Should I create more pattern by painting additional stripes or paint the grooves with a bright white to give it a paint chip look, and/or paint the mirror and surround it with glossy white frames for drama? Or shoud I just live with the stripes as they are until I get another shot of inspiration? Not so sure what to do.

As always, I am open to advice and suggestions. What do you do when a project falls short of your expectations?

Hi, visiting you from MM, just love the stripes, I did something similar a few years ago with matte and satin finish…I love the tones you chose.

I love the stripes! I’ve always wanted to try them but it seems so hard to get just right. I think you did an awesome job. I agree it needs so sort of punch. I’m afraid I don’t have any ideas. Sometimes waiting for the right idea is the best method.

  3. This is just beautiful. I don’t think it’s too brown. I like how it adds a contemporary element to the classic furniture.

I love the stripes. I think when you hang something about the buffet it will change how you feel about it. I think it is a wonderful transition from traditional to updated. Beautiful job.

i think this is so different and unique. i like the different tones of brown you used, you just need something like orange or red to make it pop. or maybe blues.

Thanks everyone for all the stripe love! Sometimes when you look at something too long with a critical eye, you convince yourself that its not working. I really appreciate the positive feedback. You made my day!

When a project doesn’t go the way I wanted I let it simmer. Sometimes for way too long. I always tell my kids “If you don’t love it right now, you aren’t going to love it later.” Sadly, I don’t always take my own advice so I can really sit on some of my mistakes for a long time.

Accessories always do the trick. I would look for some in bold reds or bright white. I like the strips! I could never do that, as my taping abilities SUCK!!!

I love your stripes! I think you’ll like it better with bright accessories! Visiting from Transformation Thursdays :)

  13. You did a GREAT job with your stripes! You could paint that mirror you had above in the “before” photo black… I think that would look great with the brown tones. If you were interested in adding more “pop” you could paint the buffet black as well. You did a fab job making that wall a focal point. Thanks for sharing it with us at the PoPP.

I love your stripes, although I think you would up the wow factor if you added some stripes of a dark burnt red colour. Green would also work if you have that in an adjoining room, if not then I would go with the red. It adds a really nice focal point to the room.

Hi, love it, it´s clasic, it´s formal, it´s clean…BUT! cut the monocromatic brown with some other such as red, green, brown is a neutral color and you can do whatever you want with it…I don´t know it´s…in spanish “pan con pan” (bread with bread, a sandwich of air!) my lady, take out “your black people side”! some vivid colour. ideas: cream colour cushions with big polca dots in hot pink-chocolate-light green colour(pop stile) or flowers ; a large false tree sticker on the wall ( you can order it by internet); and get rid of those candles, they are nice but that´s not the place where they belonge. Fiu! I´ve finish, toke me half an hour to tipe theese lines. XXXXX OOOOOO!!!!
